Why Avoid Tea With Supplements

Tea can interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals, mainly because it contains compounds called tannins and polyphenols.

Here’s how it works.

1. Tannins bind to minerals

Tea (especially black and green tea) contains tannins, which can bind to minerals in the digestive tract.

When this happens, the mineral forms a complex that the body can’t absorb well, so it simply passes through the gut.

Minerals most affected include:

  • Iron (especially non-heme iron from plants or supplements)

  • Zinc

  • Magnesium

  • Calcium (to a lesser extent)

This is why people with Iron Deficiency Anaemia are often advised not to drink tea with meals or iron tablets.

2. Polyphenols reduce absorption

Tea also contains polyphenols, powerful plant antioxidants. While healthy, they can block certain nutrient transporters in the intestine, reducing how much of a supplement gets absorbed.

Iron absorption can drop by 60–90% if tea is taken at the same time.

3. Caffeine can increase excretion

Tea contains caffeine, which has a mild diuretic effect. This can slightly increase the loss of water-soluble nutrients such as:

  • Vitamin C

  • B vitamins

  • Although fine with pumpkin seed oil supplements

However, this effect is much smaller than the tannin-mineral interaction.

4. Timing makes a big difference

Tea doesn’t permanently block nutrients — it mainly affects absorption when taken at the same time.

A simple rule often recommended:

  • Take supplements at least 30–60 minutes before tea, or

  • 1–2 hours after drinking tea

This allows nutrients to be absorbed properly.

Important point

Tea mainly interferes with mineral supplements, not most vitamins. So things like:

  • vitamin D

  • omega-3

  • vitamin B12

are much less affected.

💡 A useful trick many clinicians suggest is taking supplements with plain water or vitamin-C-rich drinks, which can actually improve mineral absorption.

More Information

There is no strong evidence that caffeine improves the efficacy of pumpkin seed oil supplements.

Pumpkin seed oil is typically used for:

  • prostate health (especially symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia)

  • hair health and possible support in Androgenetic Alopecia

  • general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant support.

How pumpkin seed oil works

Pumpkin seed oil contains:

  • phytosterols

  • delta-7 sterols

  • essential fatty acids

  • antioxidants

These compounds may help by modulating androgen activity (particularly DHT) and reducing inflammation.

Does caffeine enhance it?

Not directly.

Caffeine does not:

  • increase the absorption of pumpkin seed oil

  • improve the metabolism of its active compounds

  • enhance its hormonal effects.

Pumpkin seed oil is a fat-based supplement, and its absorption is mainly improved by:

  • taking it with food, especially meals containing fat

  • normal digestive fat absorption processes (bile release).

Why people sometimes think caffeine helps

The confusion likely comes from hair-loss treatments, where caffeine itself has been studied for stimulating hair follicles. Because of this, some hair products combine:

  • pumpkin seed extract

  • caffeine.

But this is additive rather than synergistic—each works through different mechanisms.

Important note

For people taking pumpkin seed oil for urinary symptoms or prostate support, high caffeine intake can sometimes worsen symptoms such as:

  • urinary frequency

  • bladder irritation.

So caffeine certainly isn't considered beneficial in that context.

✅ In short:
Caffeine does not improve the effectiveness of pumpkin seed oil supplements. Taking pumpkin seed oil with meals containing fat is what most supports its absorption.
