Laser Hair Removal
Shaving, waxing and threading all deal with hair that has already grown.
Laser works on the follicle itself, which is why the results build across a course rather than disappearing by the weekend.
It's one of the most straightforward treatments we offer, and one of the most consistently appreciated. It's also one where the quality of the device and the skill of the operator matter far more than most people realise.
How it works
Laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That energy converts to heat, which travels down the hair shaft to the follicle and damages its ability to produce new growth.
The critical detail is timing.
Only hairs in the active growth phase respond, and at any given moment that's a fraction of the hair in any area. The rest are dormant and will be unaffected.
This is why a course is necessary — each session catches a different portion of the hair as it cycles into growth.
Most people need between six and eight sessions. Some need more. Hormonal areas in particular can need ongoing maintenance, and we'll be honest with you about that at consultation rather than after you've paid for a course.
Results — what to expect
Across a full course, most people see a substantial reduction in the amount of hair growing, and what does grow back is typically finer and lighter.
We describe this as reduction rather than removal, because that's what the evidence supports. Some follicles recover over time, and hormonal changes can prompt new growth in areas previously treated. Many people have a maintenance session once or twice a year to hold their result.
Results vary considerably depending on your hair colour, hair thickness, skin tone and any underlying hormonal factors. Laser works on pigment, so dark hair responds best. White, grey, red and very fine blonde hair contain little or no pigment and do not respond — no laser or IPL device can treat them, whatever you may read elsewhere. We'll tell you at consultation if your hair falls into this category.
All skin tones
Older laser systems carried real risk for deeper skin tones, and a lot of people were turned away or burned as a result.
Modern systems address this with different wavelengths — a longer wavelength bypasses the pigment in the skin and targets the hair follicle more selectively, which makes treatment appropriate across the full range of skin tones when the correct settings are used.
We assess your skin type at consultation, patch test, and select wavelength and settings accordingly. If we don't think we can treat you safely, we'll say so.
Your patch test
A patch test is mandatory before your first treatment, and it isn't a formality.
We apply a small number of test shots at the settings we intend to use, and then leave at least 48 hours before treating. This tells us how your skin responds and lets us adjust before treating a whole area.
We won't treat anyone on the same day as their first patch test.
Any clinic that offers to is cutting a corner that exists for a reason.
Patch tests are also required again if there's been a significant gap since your last course, or if your skin has changed.

What the treatment is like?
Sensation. Most people describe a hot snapping or flicking feeling against the skin, like an elastic band. It's brief and it's tolerable, but we won't tell you it's comfortable. Our device uses integrated cooling, which helps considerably. Sensitive areas — upper lip, bikini — are noticeably sharper than arms or legs.
Duration. From five minutes for an upper lip to around an hour for full legs.
Afterwards. The area may look pink with slight bumps around the follicles, rather like mild heat rash. This usually settles within a few hours. You can go straight back to your day.
Shedding. Treated hairs don't fall out immediately. Over the following one to three weeks they work their way out of the skin, which can look like regrowth but isn't. Don't be alarmed by it.
Before and after your appointment
Before:
-
Shave the area 24 hours beforehand — do not wax, pluck or thread for four weeks prior, as the follicle needs to be present
-
No sunbed use or significant sun exposure for four weeks
-
No fake tan for two weeks
-
Come with clean skin, free of make-up, deodorant and moisturiser
After, for 48 hours:
-
No hot baths, saunas, steam rooms or strenuous exercise
-
No swimming pools
-
Avoid perfumed products on the area
For the duration of your course: daily SPF on any exposed treated area, and no sunbeds at all.
Who we can and can't treat?
We'll postpone or decline if you:
-
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
-
Have a recent tan, whether from the sun, a sunbed or fake tan
-
Take a medication that causes light sensitivity — tell us everything you take
-
Have taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the last six months
-
Have an active skin infection, cold sore or inflammation in the area
-
Have a history of keloid scarring
-
Have epilepsy — we will assess individually
-
Have a tattoo or permanent make-up in the treatment area, which we work around
-
Have white, grey, red or very fine blonde hair in the area
If you have PCOS or another hormonal condition, laser can still help considerably, but expect to need more sessions and ongoing maintenance. We'll be specific about this at consultation.
Treatment is available to over-18s only.
Frequently asked questions
How many sessions will I need?
Usually six to eight, though it varies. Facial and hormonal areas often need more, and maintenance afterwards. We'd rather tell you this before you book than halfway through.
How far apart are the sessions?
Around four weeks for facial areas, six to eight weeks for the body. This tracks the hair growth cycle in different areas.
Does it hurt?
There's a definite sensation — a hot snap against the skin. Most people find it very manageable, and sessions are short. We won't claim it's painless, because it isn't.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes, and please do. Shaving is fine throughout. Waxing, plucking and threading are not, because they remove the follicle the laser needs to target.
Will it work on my blonde hair?
Probably not, if it's very fine or light. Laser targets pigment. We'll be honest at consultation rather than sell you a course that won't work.
Is it safe for darker skin?
With the right device and settings, yes. This is exactly what the consultation and patch test establish.
Can I have it while pregnant?
We don't treat during pregnancy or breastfeeding. There's no strong evidence of harm, but hormonal changes make results unpredictable and it isn't worth it.
What if I've had a course elsewhere?
No problem at all. Bring any details you have, and we'll patch test and assess from scratch.
